- Novell Releases NetWare SQL - Version 3.0
-
- Release provides users with flexible access to Btrieve-based data and
- support for Macintosh clients
-
- AUSTIN, Texas -- February 10, 1992 -- Novell, Inc. today announced NetWare
- SQL v3.0, the newest version of its relational data access system for
- NetWare v3.11. NetWare SQL provides flexible access to data created by
- applications built on Btrieve, Novell's industry standard record manager.
- It also features expanded desktop support to include Macintosh personal
- computers through Apple Computer's Data Access Language (DAL) as well as
- the capability of sharing Btrieve-based information with major popular
- front-end applications.
-
- "Database services are a core technology for business applications and
- network computing," said Jim Bills, executive vice president for Novell.
- "Btrieve is the underlying record manager for NetWare and for hundreds of
- commercial and internally developed applications. NetWare SQL provides the
- integration platform for sharing Btrieve-based data from DOS, OS/2,
- Windows, and Macintosh computers and represents Novell's commitment to
- enhancing its database technology to meet our customers' demands."
-
- "Immediate access to key corporate information is what today's business
- managers need. Novell's support for Apple's Data Access Language (DAL) in
- this new release of NetWare SQL provides Macintosh users with the ability
- to exchange information across the company and integrate it with familiar
- personal computer applications," said Jim Groff, director of marketing for
- Apple Computer's Enterprise Systems Division.
-
- Larry Winn, Applications Development Manager at Georgia Power, is looking
- at using NetWare SQL v3.0 to integrate different desktop platforms. "Our
- executives want a project management system that is accessible from both
- Macintosh and Windows workstations. The other solutions we've looked at
- required either purchasing software or protocol drivers for some or all of
- the workstations involved. What we really want is a client-server based
- solution that contains all the components we need. We are excited about the
- possibilities of this new technology."
-
- NetWare SQL v3.0 continues Novell's leadership in the data management
- marketplace. In August, 1990 NetWare SQL became the first SQL NetWare
- Loadable Module (NLM-) to ship for the NetWare 3.x platform. Btrieve, first
- released in 1982, is included as a core component of the NetWare operating
- system and provides unique record management functions for many of Novell's
- products, including NetWare for SAA and the newly announced NetWare
- Management System.
-
- New in NetWare SQL v3.0
-
- NetWare SQL v3.0 is the only relational system that provides direct access
- to Btrieve-based data created with major business applications, including
- accounting systems such as Great Plains, Macola, and Platinum; project
- management systems like Primavera and Prestige; and sales management
- systems like Market Force, Telemagic, and Maximizer. NetWare SQL v3.0
- allows multiple users to share this Btrieve-based information with popular
- front-end applications, including spreadsheets like Excel and Lotus 1-2-3;
- query tools and report writers, such as Forest & Trees, R & R Report Writer
- and LightShip; and development tools, including Advanced Revelations and
- Clipper.
-
- NetWare SQL v3.0 is the first PC-based relational database engine to offer
- support for Macintosh computers through Apple's DAL interface. By expanding
- client support to include the Macintosh platform, NetWare SQL v3.0 allows
- users to share a common Btrieve database with popular DAL compliant
- applications, including spreadsheets like Excel and Lotus 1-2-3, query
- tools like ClearAccess, Data Prism, and GQL; and application development
- tools like 4th Dimension and HyperCard.
-
- NetWare SQL v3.0 offers enhanced features for more flexible data
- management, including declarative Referential Integrity which allows
- database administrators to apply data restrictions at the database level.
- This implementation is consistent with IBM's DB2 implementation and frees
- the developer from having to include Referential Integrity procedures at
- the application level. Referential Integrity restrictions are enforced by
- Btrieve. Users benefit from the additional option to configure
- Btrieve-based applications to adhere to these restrictions.
-
- NetWare SQL v3.0 also provides users with faster, easier access to
- Btrieve-based data. Users can now continue to access data anytime during
- the backup process and can use NetWare's system backup utilities or
- third-party backup products. Multiple users gain better access to
- information simultaneously through page-level locking during transactions.
- Records are rapidly pulled from enhanced caching routines (memory
- buffering), instead of having to be loaded from disk. And NetWare SQL v3.0
- also features named database support which provides transparent access to
- data located on multiple servers without requiring users to know the path
- name or server location.
-
